Personally, I enjoyed the book, The Bones Sparrow. It talks very deeply about the harsh reality of refugees that is not made aware of and is invisible to us privileged people. The tragic, sad and happy events that happened in this story was all for the better because it really made the ending special. The quote on the cover of the book: "Friendship can set you free." was a quote that related to both Jimmie and Subhi. Both of these different characters had their own story to tell and through their differences and similarities they bonded and created a friendship that brought joy to both of them. I think one special characteristic that Zana Frailon displayed was that each character no matter how young or old, has a different story to tell. Whoever it is: Eli, Queeny, Subhi's Ma, Harvey. They were all apart of the story and their own. In the author's note Frailon states: "I wish this book had never needed to be written. I wish the circumstances that lead me to write this story had never occurred." When I read this part of the book, it made me realise how real this is. How horrible the lives of the Rohingya and refugees are in some conditions. Queeny always said that Someday the struggling refugees would find a voice in this ignorant community and not be invisible anymore but even now, has that Someday truly been accomplished?

This book will rip you apart, but we knew it needed to happen. The Australian internment is only one part of a larger refugee crisis, and someone needed to tell this story. Some day, I hope one of the children born in an Australian detention center will be able to tell stories for his or herself. It's a book to preview before giving to the middle-grade reader for whom it was intended. There are terrible things in here, but like the Boy in the Striped Pajamas, the story needed to be told.

Subhi is told that tents aren't home; that this isn't food anyone would choose to eat; that there are other ways to live. He doesn't know that, though, since he's always been here. His lot is a terrible one that becomes worse.

The other main character is Jimmie. She's lost her mother, but has a notebook in which her mother's voice can be heard, if only she could read. Subhi can help her. Together they find a special kind of freedom in Jimmie's mother's stories.

This book was honestly so beautiful. The way it’s written, the emotion we feel from Subhi, everything about it is so meaningful and personal. The ending is super sweet as well. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars!!

Mid at best. This book feels like the author had an idea for a story, and then tried to shove some meaning into it.
