Raw and honest. Lacked any kind of depth or reward..just in it for the shock factor.
Really enjoyed this book! Didn’t know much about Richard Pryor going into it so I was excited to learn more. What a crazy and difficult life. But the ability to inject so much humor into the world despite it all is truly amazing. the last act of the book was really somber with his dealings with his MS diagnosis. I would def recommend for a small look at the wild times he had. Great stories and it’s just funny all the way through. RIP

Pryor autobiography. Startling, in a way, in the way he presents a lot of his life in a matter-of-fact manner. This especially includes his awful behavior towards women.
God damn, his life is an emotional trainwreck.
It makes sense as it helped him become the comedian that he did - pryor for sure held nothing back.
I had to step away from my book at the initial part as what he had written got to me.
I have no idea why people think it is okay to do shit like that to kids and frankly, that entire incident was the start of his spiral in my opinion.

Another day, another fucked up childhood leading to a totally fucked up life. Richard Pryor was born in small town Illinois, in a brothel. His dads family owned and ran several, plus a bar full of questionable clientele. He spent most of his adult life addicted to cocaine, alcohol and sex; the number of women who slept with him was astounding. He married 5 women 7 times and slept with hundreds more, blatantly pursuing and copping off with women in front of his current wife. And he hit the nail on the head several times during his autobiography; he was always a child inside wanting that unconditional, never ending love that only a mother gives. His mother was an alcoholic prostitute who was in and out of his life until she lost all custody of him to his harsh and unloving dad and paternal grandmother. He was exposed to sex from a very early age and his dad also seemed to be a sex addict; he died in his fifties from a heart attack while having sex with 5 women!! The only reason he ever sobered up from any of his addictions was that he was diagnosed with MS which meant he physically couldn’t indulge, and he eventually died of a heart attack at 65. Anyway I enjoyed this book to a certain extent; it was a bit repetitive at times and I absolutely hated the way he referred to women as ‘bitches’ but it was easy to read and a real eye-opener; I never knew someone could do that much drugs and continue to live!!
