3.5 for me, maybe a 4. I need to think about it some more. This was NOT what I expected. That's not bad, I just had no idea where it was going (I didn't know anything about the author.)
And I can't say anything without ruining it for the next person who might not know what to expect.

3.5 ⭐️ Perfect campy b-horror vibes, but a little predictable

What starts off with a deeply unlikeable protagonist reminding me of how excited I was to be a cynical curmudgeon in my twenties and how I wish I had allowed myself to just enjoy life instead gradually turned into a genuinely gripping and fascinating rumination on family, religion, fate, and how those things mold and shape us.
This isn't the most amazing book I've ever read, but I felt the sincerity of the message over the course of the book and found it moving and deeply affecting. I didn't personally connect with a lot of the thematic subject matter, but I can absolutely think of a few people who might, and imagine still more that I don't know about connecting with the central difficulties around family and religion.
One of the main criticisms I have is that the twists are pretty obvious waaayyyy in advance. To her credit, Harrison manages to avoid the pitfall of making the protagonist seem like an idiot for not figuring it out with us, but it was still painful to know "x" was going to happen 20 pages or more before it happened. Ultimately I would recommend this to just about anybody just with varying degrees of enthusiasm depending on their life story and interests.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Pub date: 9/12/23 or 9/19/23 (conflicting pub dates on different platforms)
This borderline realistic horror is a hard book to review without spoiling/revealing too much. I thought about DNFing this book when I hit the lull in the middle, but I decided to keep reading to see where this one would go. While it did take a different direction that I was expecting, I did really like the direction it did go in; however, I wish there was more of that. There was a flashback of an incident and two that happened in the present, but that was it and I wanted more. I wasn't the biggest fan of the romance that was present in this one and I don't feel like it added anything to the story. This one did actually creep me out so much at one point I had to look at my window to make sure no one was there, which is what I want from horror novels. I would recommend this to readers who enjoy horror novels and books about cults.
