3.5 stars — It’s been awhile since I first read this series, and I think I forgot what I was getting into. I was looking forward to Gideon’s story, and it was definitely sweet…but it also fell a little flat. For me it was a good story that was missing something to turn it into a great story.
Gideon was definitely charismatic and charming…wait, does charming come from charismatic? Is that the same word? Ahhh, not quite. And so I can confidently say he had both going for him. I appreciated his work ethic, his drive, his forthrightness…but I was missing something to really connect with him I think. He was ridiculously sweet, kind and loyal once he figured out Lucy was the one (which was immediately). I appreciated how doggedly he pursued her, how he didn’t pressure her, but didn’t allow her to push him away. But really? Otherwise he felt a bit flat. I needed some growth, some depth there.
I can say the same for Lucy. She was fun and adorable, and I felt for what she was going through with the baby and her ex…and I LOVED that she was a narrator. But outside of that? There wasn’t a lot that made her special.
Even their romance was good, but not particularly dazzling. It was definitely a slow burn, and in the end a fade to black…which is fine (though I was a bit surprised). But mostly it just happened. And the time jumps didn’t help me connect with them as a couple. That seems to be a common theme with this series for me, NOT a fan of the time jumps.
Even the secondary characters were fairly surface level. Yes, we got to see bits of the Thompson family, and that was fun. But I was left without resolution about Eli. Gideon’s whole family ragged on him for his reputation and were disbelieving of his feelings, and I kind of wished they’d apologized for that or something. Rissa was definitely cool, and probably the most prominent new character. I thought perhaps the Grandpa would play a role, but he kind of disappeared after the beginning. It’s like we didn’t get a chance to learn more and fall deeper for our MCs through their interactions with others.
And honestly, my stupid notice everything brain noticed a whole bunch of loose threads that were either never addressed, or vaguely mentioned. The biggest one for me was Eli wanting to meet up with Gideon to talk about something, and we never see that happen. What was up with that?
I was just in the wrong mode for this book I think. It started off strong and I was excited, but it just didn’t ramp up like I was hoping. Bummer. I’m giving it a half star bump because Gideon truly was sweet with Lucy and the baby though.

Back to visit the Thompson Family again! Gideon is the landscaper of the family and known as a ladies man around town. When he meets Lucy something clicks and he can't get her off his mind. Lucy and her boyfriend move from Colorado to be closer to her grandfather. When things go very wrong Lucy and Gideon start a friendship that turns into something more. This story is super sweet and I really enjoyed it.
