I thought this was a really well crafter nonfiction about early 20th century Ukraine and setting the stage for how and why this famine was able to occur and the short/long term consequences. For my tastes it blended narrative nonfiction telling well with facts. Some of the descriptions were really difficult to read so know that at times the results of the famine are described quite graphically.

This was a really tough book to read, not only as it dealt with abject cruelty being dealt out to so many powerless people but also as my grandparents and their families lived through this famine and were witnesses to these horrors and the deaths of their loved ones.
This book is meticulously researched and the facts are laid out clearly and without bias. The Soviet Party attempted to hide the reality of what was happening in Ukraine from the world and first person accounts of this time and books like this are so important to ensure that the history of the Holodomor is never lost.

What can I say, the preeminent historian of Eastern Europe, Anne Applebaum, does it again. She has written a wonderful narrative that is meticulously researched. There are no questions I have left to ask her as she has answered almost everything possible. She is a great author and I highly suggest checking out her other books. If you love history and you are interested in understanding the Holodomor then I definitely recommend this book. However, if you are turned off by small-details and like big pictures more, this book might not be for you. Nonetheless, I believe it is still worth checking out and Anne Applebaum has delivered once again for me.
