Long, but very educational and eye opening

Thorough description of the sad history of Russia's quest to dominate and annihilate Ukraine and its culture. Didn't actually finish.

Wow, what a book. This was probably the hardest thing to read for me in a long time. The detailed texts about famine times and testimonies from this period in Ukraine were totally nerve-racking. But Applebaum is not only doing this to shock and give readers emotional reaction. She shows perfectly the context of the times, Soviet Union and their internal politics. Her explanation about USSR motivation behind this is quite shocking, and I am not 100% sure I take it for granted. However, it makes total sense. At least for an outside observer.
This book is even more crucial right now, in the times of Russian invasion on Ukraine. Shows the long-lasting conflict there and Russia's geopolitical agenda towards Ukraine and its people.

Comprehensive human and political history.

This book is dry and at some points repetitive, but I think the repetition is useful for driving home the reality of the holodomor famine and explaining the connections between the genocide and current conflicts between Ukraine and Russia. This is definitely a history I wish I'd known more about earlier.

Great book about the history that never been taught in Soviet Union. Unbelievable atrocities on own people. That still carries on to this days.
Reminder of the story of my grandmother whose mum was relocated to Kazakhstan and had to survive with three children. To do this she sent her youngest daughter to the orphanage so she could be fed, and the other two had to walk kilometers to school (to get some food at lunch) through the steppe hiding from wolves and other dangers along the way.
Great research on the horrible time.

A heart-rending and thorough record of the Holodomor, its causes and consequences.
