DID NOT FINISH

I want to come back to this in the fall. By the prose is just… weird. It’s not dense but it feels dense.

A simple, silly, cozy read. It’s pretty low stakes and has plenty of humor. Includes some romance, nicely developed friendships, a cute cat as a familiar, and some court politics. It’s very lowkey, which is a nice break sometimes from high fantasy. And I like that the witch is a man! I went into it blind, without reading the description, so I was surprised. Witches and mages are different here (hehe, you will see).

I picture the main guy like Eddie Redmayne, but a little more muscle.

I randomly chose this book when it was offered for free from kindle unlimited. I didn't get around to reading it for a couple YEARS. When I finally started it, I was surprised by how long it was. I'm not usually interested in long reads (sorry!). I was also shocked to see it rated so highly on goodreads and amazon, so I commited to finishing it and reminded myself it's not a race and there's no pressure to get through a 600+ page book as quickly as possible.

I found the book perfectly lighthearted and entertaining. The world and character building was done really, really well. I was absolutely the kind of book you can picture in your mind. I found the ended completely unsatisfying though. I couldn't believe how much happened in the book just for it to end rather abruptly. There was really no plotline that was tied up. Every single story we were within is still out there hanging, and I just don't like that. I don't like the expectation that a person will read a sequel for the main story to have a satisfying ending! It's different when there are B, C, D stories that the subsequent books go onto explore, but for a 600+ page book. not to have wrapped up a single thing is wild to me!

Such a fun & funny ride! Would recommend to anyone looking for a fun fantasy with laugh out loud humor. Slow burn romance, mouth watering food descriptions (do not read while hungry!)

This one took me a long time to read. I think because the pace is so slow and I'm not sure if there is much of a plot. Also, it's obviously part of a series. Too many things left unresolved at the end.
