The Charm Offensive

This book surprised me, in a not positive way unfortunately. I can see myself liking the writing and the progress of the story, but I cannot bring myself to love the main love interests. Their episodes triggered me too much I felt too drained to enjoy their chemistry. But then again, this is a book I can see myself recommending because of the writing, the built-up tension and the healthiness of the personalities.
The women were SO amazing tho they overshadowed the men, especially Dev and Charlie, whom I was supposed to, yknow, be interested in.

I struggled with whether or not these characters felt like an accurate representation of gay men, as a gay man I was happy to see the representation but it felt forced or like very overt pandering at some points.

This was quite cute and heartwarming and I also have some frustrations about it!!

I loved the concept and the queer awakening via reality tv, and the side characters were so precious. I really felt the chemistry of Charlie and Dev’s relationship as it grew, and I was really rooting for them most of the time.

I appreciate the focus on mental health and the attempt to destigmatize it, but the execution fell a bit flat for me. It felt like the answer being thrown at us was if you go to therapy you will be healthy, good luck!

As for Charlie, I don’t care about millionaires so that wasn’t my fav as a character concept, but it felt like the realities of life were very detached from the plot (which I guess makes sense with reality tv) so that didn’t really impact him as a character that much. I can’t speak to the nuances of the rep from Dev’s character, but honestly it felt like he was Indian just for the sake of a more diverse book, and it wouldn’t have read that much different if he were white??? There was nothing that stood out to me as terribly offputting about his character at least, so that could have been done worse.

I don’t know who fell in love with Charlie first, me or Dev. They’re both just so into one another and I love love love the friends to lovers aspect (I’ll never not eat that shit up). I wanted to smack Dev after Macon, but I think the author really did justice by these characters showing realistic mental health struggles and reinforcing the notion that we should strive to obtain our own happiness instead of relying on others, first. If anything I just needed another, longer, spicier epilogue. I
