All around exactly what I wanted it to be. Enough plot intrigue to keep me reading, enough philosophizing to make me think, and enough obscure references to make me learn new things. Themes, motifs, and lessons were all conveyed with enough subtlety that I could follow them without being told outright, as well as ascribe some of my own interpretations. Elements that were repeated throughout the book without clear meaning were all wrapped up in the end to answer every question. 5/5.

Fantastic, I loved Adso's story telling and his insights into the events going on around him, I also appreciated his confusion as I too was confused at times. There were some moments that were a bit slow and went deeply into Medieval Christian philosophy that didn't interest me as much as the murders but I enjoyed how it added to the context and build of the story overall.

a dense but satisfying read. I realized pretty quickly that I kinda had to let go and go with the flow rather than worry about what each and every Latin phrase or historical reference meant, which was hard to do as someone who always wants to look up unknown concepts when I read, but once I finally got comfortable doing that it became enjoyable.
I did struggle with the ending but not in a way where I disliked it.it's tough to read a really long and involved detective story and realize that at the end none of it really matters and the detective you've been rooting for has been a failure, effectively. but interrogating why that made me so uncomfortable was an interesting exercise that really made me think which is what good literature is supposed to do. and eco's postscript at the end was super interesting to read as well. he's undoubtedly pretentious af but hey he knows what he's doing lol. definitely not opposed to reading more of his works in the future.
