Graphic: Religious bigotry
Moderate: Homophobia, Torture, Murder, Sexual harassment
Minor: Death, Emotional abuse, Blood, Dementia, Injury/Injury detail
I had problems in that I don't speak Latin or Greek or Italian and I don't know much about monastic sects etc. Those issues a side it was still a compelling murder mystery but it left me with a lot I didn't understand and it took me over 3 weeks to finish. Probably not worth it.

This is the first Eco I have ever read. I have seen the 1986 movie several times as a kid/teenager, but the ending never quite opened for me. Now, that problem had been solved.
The first 90 pages or so of the Finnish version felt like walking knee-deep in a bog; I had to force myself through the overly-verbous descriptions of doors and history (the first two times I've attempted reading this have halted here), but after that everything became more and more interesting and the book read more like a traditional detective story (with some slower parts here and there). I've heard this was Eco's way, but I have no comparison, so don't know if it's true.
I liked it very much in the end, although the need to force myself through parts is not something I really hope from my books, so I'll need to leave the stars at 4.
