Honestly felt the first half was a little hard to get into- it’s own language bogged it down in the beginning, but matured as the novel progressed into something I honestly can’t be mad about. I think the lore contained in the book despite it’s small size was amazing and genuinely made me want to see other fairytales set in the same universe, but I’m happy with this little sliver into it that we got.

A mermaid and plague doctor go on a gore filled quest. I wasn't all that invested in the characters or story, but the mermaid lore was interesting. The writing made this novella slightly amusing.

The prose in this book is unlike anything I've ever read. Achingly beautiful, and deeply grotesque, and bitterly sweet. This was a short book, though flowery, it was simple in it's construction. Written from the perspective of a mermaid, detached from human experiences, this was expertly penned to *feel* as though some ephemeral mythic being had written it.

The story was thoughtful and inventive, while also drawing on classic tropes. It was beautiful.

I picked this book because I'm 2 books shy on my reading goal and I wanted to cram in a couple shorties. But don't be fooled by its length, I'm ranking it near the top of my list.

I just... so good. I loved it. The ending wasn't how I would have wanted it ended... but reflecting on it, it was perfectly satisfying, well-written and enjoyable. It was very Neil Gaiman esq in the way the plot progressed and the whole vibe was a fun dark and mysterious thing. I went into it expecting more horror/thriller which it wasn't. But I kinda loved it for that. It feels like something that will sit in my brain for longer due to what it actually is.
