Felt a little long winded to me but still like it for the most part. Was disappointed Meg made it out

Currently eating an apple as I write this review LOL
In my review for Wendig’s previous book, (The Book of Accidents) I mentioned a few things that are exactly true for this one.
-Reminiscent of Stephen King
-Too long and could’ve used some editing to be shorter
-Pretty good at first but then kind of drags on but that goes hand in hand with how long it is IMO
Both books are pretty similar with the pacing as well but moving on from his last book. This book becomes dark and full of gore and I thought that was well done. I enjoyed the creepy parts a lot. There were a little bit too many characters to keep track of which is fair since its about a town going crazy but I could’ve done without a couple of the POVs and some of the political commentary which I never want to hear about in any book in general. I think this authors books would be much stronger if they were shorter, honestly. Anyway, another solid 3 stars from this author.
Thank you to Netgalley for an advanced copy of this book!

4.25 stars!
This is my 2nd book by this author, and I can confidently say that if you're looking for someone who writes like Stephen King, look no further! Wendig has definitely perfected the insanely gross, horrifying, and obscene imagery that King is known for, and there were several moments in this story that gave me a visceral reaction and that will be hard for me to forget. I loved the concept of this story as well because it seemed so simple and almost childish at first, but it quickly grew into this very disturbing and intriguing supernatural phenomenon. What I wasn't crazy about here is the length of this. This was LONG. Which isn't usually too much of a problem for me if the characters have good development and keep me interested. But because there are so many of them here, and we jump around in time quite a bit as well, it was hard to justify the length of the story. I am interested in reading more by him, though! I just hope the next one is a little less ambitious and more finely honed.

This book has a bit of everything for everyone. Tension, thrills, a bit of philosophy, and more knowledge about apples than I ever knew I wanted to know. I read reviews about the artist’s poor sense of humor, but nothing stood out as truly awful to me.
Graphic: Body horror, Death
Moderate: Addiction, Suicide
Minor: Deadnaming
