I wasn't 100% certain when starting this, but it was spooky season at the time and I wanted to try out my first monster/fantasy/paranormal romances that month.
And I can happily say, I really enjoyed this!
As I'm learning, it's important in the romance genre not to judge books by their covers because I was expecting pure smut, just... with orcs, but it wasn't that at all!
(I mean... they got down... But there was a LOT more going on in this book outside of that)
Admittedly this book won't be for everyone (which I think can often be the case in monster romances).
But it definitely WAS for me!!
My goodness.
I certainly wasn't expecting to read an orc romance that also somehow manages to discuss abortion laws and a woman's right to make their own choice about their body! It was so interesting to see how Finley Fenn wove that narrative throughout the story. (Edit: Having now read some of the earlier books in the series you can really see Finley's writing style develop and improve. Also how the universe this story is told in develops).
I occasionally found the 'I do trust him, I don' t trust him, I do trust him again' a little repetitive. However it didn't impact my enjoyment of the book, plus It's a fairly standard practice for the romance genre!
Aaaand the heroine was in a pretty bananas situation, so I feel like it was fair to be overwhelmed š
I left this book definitely wanting to read more of the series and planning to start at the very beginning.
When it does get steamy... Good lord.
But don't go into this expecting your usual rom com steamy scene.
Orcs have a whole heap of other stuff going on š - as I said it definitely won't be for everyone. But I found it interesting reading something a bit different!

I loved Gwyn! I'm a bit sad that Joarr is no longer Skai and I didn't really think it was necessary for him to be a Seer when he was already the master of spies. I am glad that we got to see more of Stella. Overall I enjoyed it and I hope this series continues for a long time!
Summary: Gwyn has a shitty father and an asshole of a fiance so she moves to her Great Aunt's house to be a midwife. In busts Joarr with a plan to fuck over Gwyn to help the orcs but his plans go awry and Gwyn ends up going with him to Orc mountain to be a midwife.

Joarr can kidnap me any day. Wouldn't be kidnapping though bc I would go willingly.

This book was so engaging but so terrifyingly intense. I didn't even feel like I could breathe til I was nearly 90% of the way through. This is sooooo emotionally taxing.

This is my absolute favorite of all Fennās books- just wonderful!

I love how the conflict is solved with conversation and compromise rather than with bloodshed. Gwyn is so sweet and hard-working, and gets caught up in her own head way too much which is incredibly relatable. The way her selfharm is written is very raw and relatable, as is her recovery. Joarr is funny and sweet, and these two are by far my favourite couple under Orc Mountain

I really enjoyed this book. Iāve read several of this author's books. Iām a fan. This book's target audience can be readers who like a different kind of hero. Donāt read this book if youāre a prude. This book is part of a series book 5. You should start with book one to enjoy the story best. This book took us deeper in the mountain where we learned more about the different clans' lifestyles and culture. It was very interesting and memorable. This author is very good at describing this world. The writing made me feel as if I was there in the story. The flow was smooth and had no lags or inconsistencies. Joarrās story was very well done. He hunted himself a heroine that had grit and is no nonsense. She is smart too. Joaar is bold, smart and fearless. He is also a sneaky little weasel. Who knew?! This couple had exquisite chemistry from the get go. It was scorching hot! I didnāt expect all the drama from the clan Bautul. It added a complex layer to the book. If you want a not so perfect kind of hero with no inhibitions, a heroine who likes a little extra something than you gotta hurry up and start reading this series. There are no typos/misspellings, grammatical errors or other editing failures. My biggest pleasure was exploring more of the clansā differences. There are multiple different clans under Orc Mountain. Iām eagerly awaiting Baldr and Drafliās story. I plan to read more from this author. I highly recommend this book.

It's surprising how much this series is outlandish yat deals with some very serious topics that make you truly care about the characters.
