LGBT necromantic sci-fi is really all I need to say, but I'll go one step further. Gideon the Ninth is a rambunctious, badass murder mystery that drops you into its world with little explanation. I was forced to puzzle out much of GtN's setting for half of the book, which admittedly left me confused much of the time, but once I was in, I was IN. Charismatic characters, especially in the irreverent, sarcastic Gideon. Rich necromancy-based magic systems. Action-packed swordplay and magic fights. I laughed, I grieved, I was chilled to the bone, I had a blast.

I had already added this book to my list for this year when my half sister recommended it. She said “I’m on my third read through of the series. On your first read through you basically won’t understand anything until after.” Which is advice I’m glad I had coming in. I now understand why she said that. There are mystery stories where you know from the jump what’s happened and watch as the characters figure it out. There are mystery stories where the protagonist knows more than the reader and explains everything at the end. This is neither. We know what Gideon knows. Nothing more(in fact somewhat less).

Every time I thought this book couldn’t shock me it did. I can’t wait to read the next one.

This book definitely isn't for everyone, it has a pretty slow start and relies on humor that may not land (or be funny) for some. I wasn't bothered by either of these but my biggest issue with this book was that things don't get explained very often, there is a glossary at the back of the book that explains some terminology but I would have preferred if that information was shown more naturally throughout the book. The biggest strength of GtN is the characters, they all feel very distinct which really helps out considering a lot of them are called by their first name, last name, and a nickname. I'll definitely be checking out other works by Tamsyn Muir and reading the rest of the books in the series.

Really cool concept, but the book does SUCH A BAD JOB of explaining how anything works! It cannot decide if it is scifi or fantasy, and the rules of the world are so poorly explained that it is not only confusing, but frustrating.
