I went into this not really knowing anything except goth and lesbians and boy howdy did I get more than what I signed up for LOLOL. Was absolutely not expecting this to be kind of a fantasy/sci-fi book with necromancers and sword fighters in space but it works somehow?? I really love the writing style and how funny Gideon's narration is. Also was not expecting the enemies to lovers (??) situation but it's one of my favorite tropes so I'm not complaining. The ending hit me like a truck, like I feel like I should have expected it but I did not and I was extremely upset (in a good way, but jesus damn...). Honestly the worldbuilding was kind of confusing because not very much is explained, but I was having so much fun that I didn't really mind being confused.

I think I have a problem now! I'm absolutely obsessed with this magical, morbid world and the powerful people who inhabit it! It was pretty long, but I thought the shorter chapters helped the pacing a lot. I very much look forward to reading the next book!

This book hurt my feelings.

I also have QUESTIONS, I took a break for a few weeks to nurse my emotional wounds and then tackled the next book in the series. As far as how this worked within a series:  it felt like a whole book on its own, with more mysteries and questions and next steps to pursue. So, yay, that's the best!

Fair warning. It's a very big and very messy and very vast unverse with deep as fuck lore. The prose is also complicated and dense. I recommend just shrugging and going with it  - it flows well and makes a weird sort of sense if you just let it take you along.

It's science fantasy, necromancers in space exploring ancient ruins trying to solve complicated mysteries to ascend to near godhood in order to help fight to save the universe and humanity. So it's huge in scope but also takes place in a very limited space with limited characters.

The lesbian aspect gets hyped up a lot but there's not smut.

holy crap, now that was a BOOK. so frquently i lose interest in the second half, because you're just running downhill towards the end you know is coming. the good guys win, love conquers all. with this book i had no clue what was going to happen next at any point. it wasn't like "shocking twist" it was just like a lot happening. no clue what was going to happen next right until the end. and, so much world building, so many characters to keep straight, but it didn't feel like "god this is a book with too many characters" it kind of felt like "wait who was that i want to remember them so i can figure out what is going on" like it was always right on the edge of too much. anyway. loved it. one of those books that makes me regret spending time with less perfect books.
