By far my favorite poetry collection I’ve ever read. The only one where I’ve enjoyed every poem.

I’m loving these poems; they’re so visceral
I connect/emphasize to them in a way that I don’t usually with poetry
Finally a poetry collection I like
“A gathering of bodies might be called a circus to some // and a graveyard to others.”

Thank you to Sarah Wallace for gifting me the ebook copy🫶

Some of these lines are just (ugh) *chefs kiss*
This is BY FAR my favorite poetry collection I think I’ve ever read

“A bald eagle burdens its wings with suitcases, then drops them in another land.“ (ok damn)

Yet another stunning yet heart breaking poetry collection. This is one of the hardest collections I’ve ever read but so incredibly important. Poetry remains my favourite way to learn about experiences outside of my own and this collection was no different. Noor’s words and sometimes lack of words paints such a painful image of the Palestinian experience, past and present. I would recommend this to anyone looking to read more from the Palestinian experience.

Wow, this is fucking good. Yes, this talks about a lot of tough topics such as colonization, the occupation (& current genocide!) of Palestine, the patriarchy, and immigration. But I love how straight up and fuckin' real Noor is with this collection.  Some of my fav quotes and why she is an official baddie in my book:

"Yesterday a white guy tried telling me what it's like to be a woman of color, so I placed my hands in his mouth and ruptured his vocal cords."

"When I die, I promise to haunt you forever."

"All I've ever wanted is to be the poet laureate of Flamin' Hot Cheetos."

I also loved her piece "Good Muslims Are All Around Us". It tells the reader how Muslims are expected to do good and be good, that "Muslims Should Disarm Islamophobia with Kindness". It reminds me of the quote from Mohammed El-Kurd's "Rifqa". "This is why we dance: Because screaming isn’t free. Please tell me: Why is anger–even anger–a luxury to me?" I swear on everything in my life, people of color, specifically brown people, are ALWAYS expected to be grateful, ALWAYS take the high road, ALWAYS be the bigger person. Forget that, we should be real, say it how it is, and be allowed to show our actual emotions instead of hiding them to make others feel comfortable. Imma end this rant here but yeah, read this!

started putting little sticky tabs to mark my favourite poems and at one point i had to restrain myself cause i wanted to just tab most of them. this was so good!
i really liked how the author played with form and did some very interesting things with that.
many of the poems had this air of chaos or frantic energy, which felt very deliberate and intentional, and which does something really great for the work.
