4.5 stars!
This was very good in a way I'm not sure that I can articulate. It had a little bit of everything in a way that just worked for me.
Maybe I'll formulate more thoughts on this one later.

What did I even just read lmao. I didn’t hate it though! Definitely more gore and body horror than scary and supernatural. If you like vamps that are more like supernatural dean and Sam Winchester esc vamps then you might like this! This was completely fun if you suspend your belief long enough. This was like the author say down said “let’s play never ending story” and just made stuff up along the way but it kinda works. Lots of lust and blood in this one.
Was a vamp orgy on my 2025 bucket list? No but here we are. I thought this was good in a fever dream kind of way. Don’t pick this up if you’re looking for a literary masterpiece like Dracula type fiction, but maybe just read it for bloody fun and don’t take it so seriously.
Both our main characters are kinda insufferable, one has Asperger’s of sorts and one of them is a “pick me” manic pixie dream girl. They are best friends, go on holiday and find them selves in deep shit when they accept a fun night out from a hot stranger. What follows is a series of unfortunate events. Sorta.
Enjoy!!!!

Didn't think I could like a book less than Cackle, but here we are.
I didn't like Sloane. At the very least I can rely on Harrison to make us like her main character fairly quickly (even Cackle, although I eventually ended up disliking her). But Sloan is just this bleh character who has a boring life and is resigned to it. She has no sense of humor, nothing endearing, just bleh. And then her friendship with Naomi falls into the cliche friend trope where one is reckless, the other one is responsible - nothing interesting there. I really didn't like Naomi because she kept fucking up and screwing over Sloane, up until the very end!
So much of this book felt rushed and vague and skimmed over. When we would meet a new character or arrive somewhere new, I'd be like, oh, okay here is where we are going to have the main plot of the book. Nope. They meet a new character, they're gone in 10 pages. Nothing is delved into. Henry and Sloane's relationship is barely explored. There are so many times he says he can explain things, but never does. Things just happen. Like at the very end - hey we're going to do this illegal dangerous thing last minute. Sloane = huh, what? Okay. Just like when she is first turned, she barely asks Henry any questions about being a vampire. Come, on!!!! And then we have to deal with her conflicted feelings about being a vampire. Killing people is wrong, actually I'm okay with it. Thirst is bad. Although sometimes it's good. Being a vampire sucks - no it's good. OhmyGodIdon'tcareshutupaboutit.
I understand the main focus of this book is about her relationship with Naomi, but nothing ever really comes of that. They don't have some come to Jesus moment, or even a huge fight. They get kinda annoyed with each other and that's that. We have to deal with Naomi's continual fuckups and no consequences for her actions. Does she learn from what happened at the very end? Beats me!
I wish this book focused on the group of vampires they met but we barely get to know them including Henry. Oh, and the reason why Sloane plays it safe in her life, is kinda weak. Could've made the inciting incident stronger. You become a boring ass person because of a near car accident? Nah. Give me more. Maybe someone she knew died from something she did. She actually was in a coma from said accident and has lifetime injuries. I don't know.
Mannnnnn this sucked!

I am obsessed with the way Rachel Harrison writes her characters and about friendship between women, it’s so complex and honest that no matter what fantasy element she adds it always feels real
I know this book is horror, and there are some pretty gnarly, bloody scenes in here, but the part where Sloane and Naomi walk into the vampire party is pure comedy. I would have taken one look at these people, who I imagine with their descriptions look like iwtv character, and walked out.
