This book is very uneven. The first part of the book is relatable and likable (minus somehow a woman turning 36 being considered over the hill) but then after the FMC and bestie become vampires, the story just gets disjointed. There is a scene were the FMC wants to be in control of her and her bestie’s vampirism and somehow this leads to them killing a man, stealing a car, threatening someone with a gun, hitting someone with a shoe and knocking them out, the bestie getting shot, running from the police, and causing car crashes. The ending is also very like um okay?!? Yes we are done here. Also the best friend is really annoying.
Unlikable main characters. The absurdity of the main character acting like 36 is SO old and that she’s invisible to men is… painful. Just such weird vibes all around. Like the author wanted this to be about empowered women but author is also obsessed with the desirability / attractiveness of everyone? I liked the gore and overall tone so I kept reading, hoping we’d get a good ending. Nope. Plot went nowhere.

Fine, but definitely one I'm glad I got from the library before buying. The whole book drags until the last 3 chapters or so, gearing up for an ending that wasn't as satisfying as I would have hoped. Sloane gives "not like other girls", which isn't for me, but I love the dynamics between the others in the group. Wish we got more information about the rest of them.

Deeply ok book. The moments where the author allowed herself to dive into horror were when this story was at its best but unfortunately the two main characters were too annoying and never had the fight they should have had and also the author pussied out on delivering on a death in the final act. So. Good enough for me to be interested, short enough for me to finish, generally forgettable.

Ooooo, vampire orgy!
I'm so glad that Rachel Harrison's work has gotten better over the years, as she plays with some interesting subjects: werewolves, cults, and now vampires. The book is both compelling and fun on its own, but I think it also now stands as an exemplar for the vampire genre.
Both the writing and story are some of Harrison's best yet; I was thoroughly engaged. While I wouldn't really consider this book to be too hard on the horror side, there were thrilling moments of suspense and gore throughout. I also enjoyed the vampires mentioning vampire tropes and how they differ from popular stereotypes; they're not just pointy teeth bat-people.
Not only was this a vampire story, but there's also themes of growth and adulthood intertwined into the buddying contemporary elements.
I would definitely recommend this as a vampire book for those looking to branch towards that direction, or even just as a thriller in general.
