After her husband gifts her a weekend getaway with her best friend, things go awry at a party full of mysterious strangers. Sloane must learn to live her life to the fullest, now that she has all the time in the world to do it.
This was so much fun! Sloane and Naomi were polar opposites, but both still really likeable. I think there was a really good balance of humour and horror, and a really good commentary on women's experiences with beauty standards, fear of aging, and feeling like a passenger in your own life.
I really liked the dynamic of Sloane and Naomi's friendship as well, and I think it's really great that this story gave more focus to that relationship than the romance.

So Thirsty was my first Rachel Harrison book and despite a rocky start, it still convinced me enough to read more by her.
I have mixed feelings about the friendship portrayed here. I loved how the relationship between the main character and her best friend represented what it feels like to have such an important person in your life, but at the same time, I hated her best friend. She was reckless and selfish, putting her and her best friend’s lives in danger every few chapters. I wasn’t a big fan of the main character either.
The horror elements were lacking, but it was perfectly balanced with the vampire lore which I found very interesting. The plot and pacing were my biggest issues. While I loved the idea of following the journey of newly made vampires, the plot was all over the place. It took a good third of the book to get into the meat of the story, and even then, it barely felt like there was any structure.

Another Rachel Harrison book down and another one I enjoyed!
I love me a vampire book, and out of the 3 books I had of this author, this was the one I was most looking forward to. I've seen others describe her work as "cosy horrors" and I have to say, I agree. You have these horror elements, each book different, but then a heartwarming story of growth, finding purpose, embracing yourself and all things womanhood. I found that present in all the books I've read of hers so far.
Harrison has this way of writing such complex female characters, giving them depth and layers, that make them so understandable, relatable and intriguing. This read was no different. We have Sloane, someone who is dreading getting older, in a toxic marriage with a cheating scumbag husband (fuck you Joel) and has a fear of change, so she is stuck in this loop and ignores all the bad in order to keep in this bubble of things she can control, she's scared of actually living. Then you have Naomi, who fears dying and feels she's on borrowed time, so she throws herself into things, head first. I really enjoyed their journey on accepting being a vampire and just life in general. I loved Sloane and Henry. He was a little smooth talking, swoon worthy vampire. I liked the whole vampire family wonderful, they all bonded well and all have various different things that made me individually unique.
I enjoyed the story, I did find it a little repetitive and kinda one level, but I did enjoy the journey. One thing I wished happened, was Sloane seeing Joel again to give him a bollocking for being an absolute asshole... But I am so happy she embraced her new life and is happy, with Naomi and her new family.
I may or may not of ordered her backlog, plus preordered 2 upcoming releases...
