I read this because I saw some middle school aged girls animatedly discussing it and I was curious. I thought it was very enjoyable. There's a plucky girl who knows healing arts, a Way into another world though a pool of water, a boy who can turn into a dog or a horse, and a sickness in the land keeping spring from arriving. There's nothing new here, but it's a very enjoyable book for children (girls or boys) who liked the Narnia chronicles.

I can just tell this book isn't going to be for me, isn't going to astound me. Three or so chapters in and we've jumped straight into the action but I know nothing about the characters or setting which has stopped me from connecting I think. I also am not keen on the 'parent/guardian not telling the kid vital info to protect them' trope, which I can tell is going to feature in this.

This was a quick and easy read, but I wish it had been more detailed. The world didn't really come alive in my head and the writing felt a little basic. I didn't really get a good sense of who the characters were and I'm not particularly attached to them. I do really like Fer's grandmother though. Some things also didn't make sense in my opinion - Fer didn't seem all that interested in her grandmother's work but all of a sudden she was a great healer. She was also absolutely miserable at school and her grandmother knew the reason but didn't seem to care about it at all? I feel like these are parts were the book could have benefitted from being a little longer. I did like the ending though and I am considering reading the other books since they're all under 300 pages anyway. I'm curious to see what adventures Fer gets up to in the future.

I couldn't help but be enchanted by this simple, magical middle grade novel.
