More like 3.5; it was a little convoluted, but I still enjoyed it.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book. I generally enjoy Sophie Hannah's books and this was no exception. I would actually give it 3.5 stars. It's a great mystery/suspense novel that you won't be able to stop reading because you will want to know who did it. There were a few unnecessary plot points - that's what lead to 3.5 stars instead of 4. There was a lot of buildup about something traumatic in Nicki's childhood that didn't amount to anything and wasn't relevant to the story. I also found her husband's reaction to her confession unbelievable. It's a fast paced book that will keep you on your toes - if you enjoy a good mystery, this book is worth reading.

Whyyyy is this my first book of 2016. NO. So bad. So tedious. 50 million characters. Ridiculous chapters of fake newspaper articles that I skipped over. Everything about it, unnecessary. BYE FELICIA.

DNF at 50% on the dot. I just can't anymore with this book.
I don't like Nikki, I think she needs to get some professional help for herself. Aside from that, I found it jarring to go back and forth from Nikki's first person perspective to the detective's third person perspective. And apart from those things, I found that this was more of a windy-for-the-sake-of-winding story rather than an intricately weaved tale. So I'm done. I planned to finish or at least skim through the end to see who did it, but thankfully someone included that in their review so I can walk away from this book happily.

Just meh. There was so much going on and it didn't seem like it was going anywhere fast. It took a looong time (for me) to get through this one, and I read another book alongside it because I just didn't care about finishing this one.

Love Sophie Hannah! I did not find this book as captivating as others I've read by this author, though I am not sure what it was about the story that didn't catch me. I'll keep on with the series if there are others to come.

Well I'm glad that's over. It will be the last Sophie Hannah book I read (I foolishly got all of the Spilling series so have been ploughing through them). The most unprofessional police officers, most irritatingly weak, pathetic, manipulative female leads and most contrived storylines ever.
I've no idea why the author profile says "Queen of psychological thriller" - off the top of my head I could name several female authors who do it so much better (even Cornwell is better!!).

I felt lost for most of the book. I didn't realize it was book 9 in a series. But the biggest drawback is that I didn't like any of the characters. I know that with Gone Girl, those kinds of books are in vogue now, but I need someone, anyone, to root for.

I like me a good locked room mystery, but this is anything but that. A book that doesn’t give you a chance to figure out whodunit, in my opinion, is not a successful book.
There were crucial details held back—details, I might add, that the characters knew but were not revealed to the reader—because if they’d been presented up front, we would have figured out the whole thing too soon. (Which is my least favorite thing about mysteries… There's definitely a delicate balance). The twists here were so twisty that they weren’t even shocking, they just seemed extremely implausible. If you read this and figured out who the killer was before it was given up, you are a stunning genius and I applaud you.
I guess in the future I’ll stay away from books dubbed “unputdownable,” which, I’d like to state for the record, is not a word.
