I did this on audio (even though I own the book) and it held my attention, mostly. I expected a little more, but the author taught me quite a bit about climbing. I know I would never do it, but it was interesting to imagine what the characters went through, while depending on nature and only a small group of people.

This book sees an inexperienced, and borderline incompetent, mountain climber invited to climb one of the tallest mountains in the world, because of course she is, we wouldn't have a book without her I guess?
While attempting to climb the mountain, she becomes increasingly "Oh woe is me" as people around the climbing party die. Only she is willing to get to the bottom of these disasters, because of course. This she does by the time the book ends.
My biggest problem with this book, and books like it, is how "full of woe" its central is. I'm not saying that female characters should be just like guys, but there have to be some "strong female characters, without quite so much self-doubt", doesn't there?

The mystery itself was a bit predictable, but I had a ton of fun. I loved the setting and all the mountain-climbing details enough to bump it up a star. Recommended for people who love winter survival stories and outdoor adventure narratives.
