There's a really distinct difference between Weiner's older work and her newer work, and it's clear that she's really honed her style and characters in the past decade. While all of her protagonists are fairly similar, in recent years she's managed to make them a lot more sympathetic, which makes the book a lot better. This book was sweet - everything worked out pretty perfectly, but I also don't read Weiner's books expecting much else, since they're usually light reads. I liked the topics Weiner tackled in this one, and loved the focus on mother/daughter relationships.
Though I am a little horrified that Abby cheated on her long-term partner and it was just kind of glossed over? That was a bit of a shock to me.

3.75 - Had I not found this book, abandoned in an airport in need of a home, I probably would not have read it. I liked it but phew it was a lot. In good ways and in bad ways. Would I read another book by this author? Probably if it piqued my interest. Mildly similar to Katherine Center. Interesting (although too numerous) characters with decently satisfying ended. Definitely check the trigger warnings.

I loved the plot and the topics explored in this book but the writing was a little choppy at moments

I liked the cycling stuff in this book. I did like Abby and her growth in her various relationships. A lot of the other characters felt underdeveloped. Some of the plot stuff (like TikTok, or bodily autonomy or COVID references) really ground this book in 2023/2024, for good and bad.

I stayed up entirely too late to read this in one setting. It made me laugh, it challenged me and it made me feel hopeful too! It delves into some very serious topics so be sure to check content/trigger warnings if you're a sensitive reader.

"Eileen wanted her daughter to shrink herself to fit into the space the world allotted, instead of fighting to change the systems and institutions that wanted women to keep themselves small. She treated Abby like a problem in need of solving instead of asking, even once, whether it was the world, not her daughter, that might have been wrong."

"You can't leave yourself open to the good things - happiness, true love, real connection - if you aren't willing to risk being hurt."
