Brilliant addition to the series, may be my favourite yet. Amazingly written and as always a true page turner that I struggle to put down. The writing paints the picture of the characters and story so amazingly well, it easily plays out like a movie in your mind.
This is a huge return to form for the Strike series. Despite being an absolute breeze block at 947 pages long, I was gripped from the first chapter and couldn't put it down. Unlike several other books in the series, I don't think it could have been substantially edited down without losing important parts of the plot. I feel like Rowling is at her best when she's dealing with pure fiction rather than grinding an axe. The worst books in the series in my opinion have been The Silkworm (about what a narcissistic cesspit the trade publishing industry is) and The Ink Black Heart (about a toxic online fandom turning against a female fantasy writer). This one really worked though, with a great payoff at the end...

No sé ni cómo empezar esta reseña, y eso que han pasado dos días desde que terminé el libro. Es que estoy sin palabras, amiga. Puede que este libro sea mi favorito (por el momento) de toda la saga, tanto por la trama como por el desarrollo de los personajes.
Centrándonos en el caso en sí, todo el tema sectas y religión me parece de lo más interesante. Yo, que no soy una persona religiosa, me fascina el pensamiento detrás de la religión y de las sectas, que es llevar esto al extremo y con fines mucho más lucrativos. En este caso, tenemos la secta ficticia de la UHC, una religión que proclama la igualdad y que mezcla un montón de religiones, pero que, una vez dentro, te das cuenta de que la igualdad se la pasan un poco por el forro. Robin se infiltra allí para poder sacar información sobre la secta y sobre uno de sus miembros, puesto que la persona que los ha contratado quiere sacar a su hijo de allí. Estos capítulos han sido increíbles, cargados de tensión, dejándote con ganas de saber más y de saber cómo se van a desarrollar los eventos. Se intercalaban con la perspectiva de Strike en Londres, que seguía buscando pistas por su cuenta e intentando mantener la rutina sin su socia y amiga. Este cambio de dinámica me ha parecido maravilloso, el pacing increíble y la forma de narrarlo, sublime. La resolución del caso también ha sido espectacular, como siempre, y me ha dejado con la boca abierta. Una vez más, estoy fascinada por estos libros.
Sin embargo, lo más importante para mí y lo que me ha hecho amar este libro, es la evolución entre la relación de Strike y Robin. Es que los amo. Aquí, tras tanto tiempo separados, se puede ver que ambos, aunque sigan obcecados en no admitirlos, se aman y se respetan y quieren intentar algo, pero el miedo siempre les frena (eso, y relacionarse emocional o carnalmente con otras personas para desviar la atención de esos sentimientos). No supero la escenacuando Robin sale de la secta, en el hotel, cuando comparten cama (un trope que amo) y le dice «I knew you were there. I knew you were there». Es que, amiga, peak romanticism!!!!! . Llorando me quedé después de leerlo, en serio. Tuve que pausar la lectura por unos minutos para poder digerirlo. Y bueno, qué decir del final!!! Es que, chicas, screaming, crying, throwing up!!! Después de 7 libros de slow burn (amo, una vez más, esa trope; es mi favorita con diferencia), STRIKE POR FIN HA ADMITIDO QUE ESTÁ ENAMORADO DE ROBIN. Y LA GUARRA DE LA JK DECIDE TERMINAR EL LIBRO AHÍ!!!!! AAAAAHHHHH Obviamente, sé que el libro siguiente no los va a unir, porque Strike aun tiene mucho trabajo que hacer (la muerte de Charlotte me parecía super necesaria, porque, narrativamente, el personaje ya no aportaba más). . En fin, que después de esa última escena, necesito la octava entrega para ayer, pero aún toca esperar a septiembre y, lo que es peor, a que alguien decida poner el libro a la venta en segunda mano. No sé si será capaz de aguantar tanto tiempo sin mis detectives favoritos :(.

What can I say...I am hooked on Cormoran and Robin books. This one throws a cult into the mix, which is always appreciated. 4.5 stars for the book and 1 star for the author.
It was challenging to know I was going to listen to this for over 34 hours but it was worth every word! JK Rowling has created such a winning team of characters and a lot is advanced in their various relationships and Pat the office manager's backstory in this seventh entry in the series.
Happy to have another Cormoran Strike Novel under my belt. More please! While the compelling core case in the story involves a cult with many characteristics of authoritarian cults we've all read about in the news, there are several ongoing cases that keep us aware this is a busy office with a caseload and a waiting list. The challenge with the Universal Humanitarian Church involves the adult son of a prominent family who has joined. He has become totally estranged from them and given away his substantial assets. The church holds itself out as having many charitable missions while exercising deprivation and mind control. Robin goes in undercover and her experience is woven throughout the novel in a spellbinding series of experiences and interactions with members.
There are plot lines involving a competing agency, a stalker and his brother, domestic dalliances, etc. Strike continues to deal with his ex, a problematic fling with a new woman, his fledgling relationship with one half-sibling, Prudence, and a diet that adds humor at times. I highly recommend this completely engaging novel.
