This book...I can't even begin to write a review that would do it justice. It's expression of the terror, fear, sadness and incredible feats to survive moved me like no other book has moved me in a long time. It left me with a feeling of sadness for the fact that such despicable acts occurred towards one race/religion, and the sadness that occurs when you don't know what happened to your loved ones, even though try to remain hopeful, you suspect the worst. The acts one commits to protect your child from the harm occurring in the outside. It all brings awareness to the nastiness that is war, genocide and it's aftermath.

Beautifully written, I will recommend it to everyone to understand the atrocity that was the Holocaust.

Very moving story about the depths a woman would go to in order to survive the Nazi regime. Although Edith did not suffer in the same horrific ways that other Jews did at this time, she lived daily in fear and had to completely give up her identity. She suffered loss and gave up many things to the hands of the Nazi's without them even knowing.

I truly enjoyed reading the story of someone who had to immerse themselves in the Nazi culture. It was an interesting new look on the horrors of WWII.

This is a very unique Holocaust story. It is about a young woman who found herself stuck in the middle of political upheaval and a war zone. It is about the choices that she made to survive and how she handled those choices and the awful circumstances that she found herself in.

I felt privileged to read such an amazing story of survival. Edith was dealt a hard hand to play
Spoiler when Pepi refused to marry her time and time again she was pushed further and further into the middle of the raging conflict. She chose not to leave because of her love for Pepi and that forever shaped her life.
However, Edith was a survivor and even though every choice she made had a price--sometimes quite a heavy price--she kept on going. I was amazed at her bravery and fortitude. I was drawn into the pages and felt myself slipping quietly into the story just as she felt herself slipping quietly away from her identity. I am glad that she let us glimpse how hard it was for her to crawl out of the life she had made for herself. I am glad that it showed, even if only a tiny bit, how she was changed by it.

My biggest criticism of this book is that I felt the story was very careful. There were many things that seemed logical to include but weren't there.
Spoiler Such as: Where did everyone end up, how did Edith deal with losing her friends and family, what happened to her relationships with her sisters, did she ever try to find Gretl?, etc.
These are all questions that I was burning to find the answers to. However, I felt the ending glossed over these and many other questions. I can't even understand how hard it was for Edith to write this story and I don't blame her at all for wanting to tell it her own way. But, in the end, I was left with a vague sense sadness that I had missed so much of this story.

Despite all of that, I am truly grateful for the portion of the story included in this book that I was able to read. I am grateful that Edith had the courage to tell her story. She was truly amazing.

I found this book to be a very interesting read. There were parts where I was ready for it to be over but over I found her story fascinating. I enjoyed reading a story from a perspective of a Jew outside of a concentration camp. I probably wouldn't read it again, but I'm glad I read it the one time!
