Even listening to this as an audiobook there were large chunks I lost focus on. Never has a film adaptation of a classic left me so disappointed in the original writing.

Very nice. Not my favorite Dickens by any means, but quite enjoyable.

I really really wanted to love this but I just didn’t and I can’t really explain why. Maybe because I already know the story from watching the film but it just lacked something. Despite that I still really enjoyed the way Dickens brought the reality of life for boys born into the poverty of society at this time. I am not the biggest fan of the way Dickens chooses to fly through some parts and drag other parts out for longer than seems necessary. He also lacks description which is something I really love to read. However. his metaphors and similes are brilliant.

It was such a rollercoaster of emotions. Many times Oliver was in a bad place and then was rescued or better and then something else happened again and again. Although the main storyline is much the same as the film, there are some additional parts and some changes. I was really surprised to find that Oliver actually plays a fairly small role in this story considering the book is titled with his name.

I wish I’d read this before the film as maybe I would have liked it better. If you haven’t seen the film, I’d recommend reading this with your eyes or even in the audiobook version as there’s a great free version on YouTube.

BOOK REVIEW
"Oliver Twist" by Charles Dickens

"Oliver Twist" is the second novel by Charles Dickens, first serialized in the year 1838. It is the story of the titular main character Oliver Twist, an orphan who is a child worker in Victorian England. This novel is based on Dickens' own experience as a pauper and poor folk.

MY THOUGHTS:
I finished this novel last week and planned on reading 2 Dickens Novels this month which I planned late, unfortunately. Those two novels being "Oliver Twist" and "The Old Curiosity Shop", Diclens' second and fourth novels, respectively.

I really admire the premise of this novel, as well as how it ends. The grim end of Fagin, rather, does brood on me from time to time because I honestly thought that this his death by hanging was the most iconic scene of the book. As much as I don't want to say this, man got what he deserved because of his evilry.

It was a great journey of Oliver Twist throughout the book. I'd say that he is a wholesome character who just wanted and needed proper guidance and conduct. The kind old lady who took him in was his window of greater opportunities for a better life.

This novel was optimistic overall. Oliver has a happy ever after as was lifted out of poverty but he too persisting, made his own fate and met new, better people. He wouldn't have to struggle begging for gruel anymore.

This novel was enjoyable but tragic, overall. This is a great starter to the bleak world of Charles Dickens. Man was just starting his adventurous career, writing longer novels later on.
