I felt like this was performative art in a book. The visuals are stunning. I particularly found it interesting how we only hear from outer perspective on the main character making it all the more vague but extremely interesting to hear what’s going on. Loses 1/4 of a star because the ending had me a bit confused.

I found The Vegetarian a disturbing book. The writing is strong but the subject matter is very dark and it is unsettling. The main character is viewed through the filters of her hisband, brother-in-law and sister who, particularly the first two objectify her.

this was written so well - the undulating between present and past tense in the last section was so cool and expertly done. the feeling of insomnia was truly conveyed! i dont know that i understood the characters or motivations or even like how things were happening but there was certainly a mood and it was interesting! the level of violence towards women was uncomfortable but gave me insight. wow!

The book revolves around the main characters decision to go vegetarian and the ripple effect of how that affects the family around her.

Han Kang explores violence through a feminist lens of a modern Korean family. The story has a touch of magical realism that makes it odd in the best possible way.

Deals with very hard topics - see content warning.
