This is the best play I’ve ever read. Witty, laugh out loud hilarious, and a tear inducing tragedy. Two completely opposite men in love with the same woman; one hideously talented in verse, the other beautifully ignorant. A story that will always withstand the test of time. I cannot thank Rostand and his undeniable genius enough. Some plays are meant to only be seen and lack when being read, but this is one that I will devour over and over and over again. A favorite.

Grandiloquent, swashbuckling... it's hard to reconcile that this sentimental work is contemporary with modernist playwrights like, say, Henrik Ibsen. That's not to say the play is a complete artifact but forward-looking? No.
Though amusing, Cyrano de Bergerac holds little for today's audience beyond the context of its time.
