North always writes his stories teetering on the edge between the supernatural and reality. Half the time I expected Charlie to really be a murderous, vengeful ghost. However, unlike The Whisper Man, I felt the events in this book a bit hard to follow - whereas the detective in the prior book had a connection to the first person narrator, Amanda did not, and her chapters felt almost like an unnecessary addition to the story. Nonetheless, I loved the twist about the victim’s identity (unless it was clearly obvious from the start and I just missed it).

Amazing read with a great twist ending! Very unexpected. Writing style was beautiful but not overly complex.

The overall plot was good. The chapters were a little confusing between the switching point of views and time periods. There is a twist towards the end I feel I should have seen coming but totally didn’t. It changed the way I saw the characters in a good way. Definitely recommend for someone who likes darker books, some scenes are pretty graphic.

The Shadows is delightfully creepy, with twists you won't see coming from a mile away, and a must read. 25 years ago Charlie Crabtree committed a gruesome murder before disappearing. Since he was never found, there's always been speculation he's still alive out there. Now, copycat killers have emerged, inspired by what Charlie did, thrusting the case back into the limelight. Then, strange things begin to happen to those who knew Charlie as a teenager. Has Charlie truly been in hiding all this time? If so, why choose now to make himself known again?
