Abysmal by Marie Ann is book 8 in the shared world of the Unlucky 13 and my first time reading this author. It has soooo many amazing tropes: daddy/boy, hurt/comfort, age gap, mental health rep. This one was a doozy, HIGHLY emotional but intentionally beautiful. It’s not an easy read. It’s heavy with depression and self-medicating and drug abuse and so much pain. But the transformation of Zevryn is amazing.

As Zevryn empties his chaotic mind, it seeps into Gavin’s emptiness and fills him with life. This bond is so good. SO GOOD. Zevryn needs. Gavin needs to be needed. The relationship these two have is complex and fragile and complicated and messy and beautiful. Gavin LOVES taking care of Zevryn and Zevryn LOVES being taken care of. It’s been a while since I’ve read such a perfect complimentary couple.

The emotions are hard. The first 35% of the book is dark and gritty. It’s so realistic and heartbreaking. BUT that makes the recovery and growth so much more meaningful.
