"Evil is the nature of mankind.”
This was such an odd little short story - full of old lore and....customs maybe? It was interesting and while I enjoyed it, I'm glad it was short.

Young Goodman Brown is my favorite short story. The plot centers around a strange and dark nighttime journey into the woods by the title character, a Puritan living in early Colonial America. It’s an interesting story on the surface and features frighteningly vivid drama. However, this story has so much more to offer than simple surface level thrills. It contains a wealth of messages and ideas that provide readers with plenty of food for thought. It also leaves room for interpretation on multiple levels: literal, allegorical, psychological, religious, historical, etc. Despite the fact that the story itself only takes up a few pages (usually 5-10 depending on the font size), it possesses so much cleverly packed depth that any reader could easily spend hours digesting it. On the other hand, if all you want is a quick and enjoyable read, it offers that as well. There is a good reason why Stephen King claims this story is one of the best ever written and I can’t recommend it highly enough.
(Beware that the dialogue is a little hokey sounding at first, since Hawthorne tried to emulate the older style of English spoken during the period. I find it pretty easy to adjust to after a couple pages though.)

Frankly, I only remember the plot to this book. It's not one of Hawthorne's best work, but it's good. It's set in the Salem witch trials era. But it's theme revolves around secret societies and conspiracy.
