I really thought I wouldn't like this book. When I read the synopsis, I sighed and thought "I'll forget it as soon as my exams will be over".
Well. I was wrong.
I liked the story. I genuinely was invested in and appreciated the writing. The ambiguity in the story (is this real or isn't it) really adds something to the story. I do regret the end, which I find a big didactic, but it's forgivable. I think this story should please people who have religious trauma /hj

As I've been noted to mention, I only wish that Hawthorne's novels are as intriguing and unusual as his short stories were. While I don't think this one is as good as The Minister's Black Veil, we see Hawthorne's obsessions with guilt, hypocrisy, and Puritanical society come into play quite nicely in this story. Indeed, the language can be a bit awkward, but not quite as incoherent and muddled as The Scarlet Letter. This story showcases the brooding, occasionally bizarre imagination of one of the so called greats of American literature.
Not something I'd typically read but you have to appreciate the skill and complexity fit into such a short tale.
2,5★ I had to read this for uni and I honestly have nothing to say. It was kinda creepy tbh. I didn’t like it but I also didn’t hate it. It was okay I guess. However, I’m confident my professor is going to make this story more interesting. Maybe then I’ll read this again and have more to say
