The secret of nightingale woods follows the story of a young girl whose mother is suffering through deep depression brought on by grief. Set in 1930’s England, it is critical of society’s view of women and mental health.
Positives: it addresses important topics especially to discuss with adolescent girls to whom the book is written.
The artwork is beautiful.
The author’s voice has a sort of pleasant magic to it.

Negatives: the plot takes a long time to develop then unfolds in a rather clumsy way. Everything ends in an overly simple “Happily ever after” sort of way.
***Biggest negative: the daughter saves her mother from her depression. This is a dangerous message to send kids. I will not encourage my sensitive preteen to read it because I don’t want her believing she is responsible for any adult’s mental well-being.
