The Half of It

Madison Beer

4.04 AVERAGE

I read this ages ago and apparently forgot to add it

Very touching, but I just don’t think that anyone should write a memoir this early in life, there’s too much more life she’s going to live

I really enjoyed reading this audiobook. I’ve only just started listening to her music but hearing her story with her own voice made me feel strangely much closer to her. It was a nice short read, but still had great emotional impact and a lot of good lessons. While some parts can be difficult to read, I think this book is valuable to read and learn from. Maybe not the top best memoir I’ve ever read, but I liked how direct and true to her that it seemed. And I would highly recommend listening to the audiobook version.

I am a fan of Madison and her music so I was looking forward to this! This was a quick, enjoyable read but a couple things that made it 3 stars for me:

1. She gave a quick look at a few moments that felt very significant in her life and then spent more time reflecting on them. I would have preferred she did more showing than telling because when she did use more of a narrative style, I found myself way more engaged and drawn in. The reflections eventually felt a little repetitive as she often came to similar conclusions about where life events led her to today.

2. This probably lends itself better to a younger audience (maybe her intended audience). The journal prompts and fan letters were very sweet and I could imagine her younger fans finding a lot of value in the advice Madison gives.

3. I would almost categorize this more as a collection of essays than a memoir? The chapters didn’t flow from one to the next a ton and it felt like each one could stand on its own.

‘If I was a boy it would’ve been different. The reaction would’ve been: oh god, poor kid he must be so embarrassed. If I was a boy and it was a girl who leaked the video of me. She would be the one blamed, called psycho, manipulative and vindictive. If I was a boy I would’ve been shielded from the consequences of my actions and allowed to move on from my mistake. But I was a girl and I wasn’t allowed to be sexual, even if all of my friends were doing the same thing behind closed doors.’

She just seems so genuine and you can really tell when listening to her audio book. She has such a kind and soothing voice. I think she can help a lot of girls from all ages with this book. Even when you’re not a teenager anymore, it heals to hear this 🤍

And as a fan, it is super cool to hear the thoughts and events behind some of her songs!

Super insightful! So so good.

but where is the other half??

I do not rate memoirs based off of the fact that this is their life story. I do remember when Madison beer first came on the scene, and the way that the Internet treated her. Listening to her perspective, and her side of the story really humanized her, and I thought her work was really well done. The short, concise nature of her story I think was done incredibly well, and I enjoyed the journal entries throughout.
