I'm very conflicted on the rating! It's a 3.5 but I rounded it up to 4, because this book deserves a boost.

I really like where the story went with showing racism in the school and how incompetent teachers are while dealing with it, or how performative their diversity activism was. I think it was very realistic that during one of the final events, a lot of white students remained racist, their prejudiced thinking unchanged despite effort and the school had to face its big problem.

My issue with this book was the writing, which especially at the beginning felt unnecessarily dumbed down and read almost like a middle grade. It improved somewhere halfway through, though and I became really invested (even cried a bit!), so I decided to raise it from 3 stars to 4.

I recommend this YA book that deals with immigration, deportation, micro-aggressions, friendship, family, belonging, and just plain old teenager stuff as well. It's done very well. I prefer books that are more story-oriented than message-oriented (that allow you to get the message through the story rather than through telling you directly), and I think this book does this fairly well. The main character is compelling and has a distinct voice. I know that any student who has immigrant parents or who deals with micro-aggressions in a majority white school (or anywhere, really) would really love this book. I also highly recommend this book to those in a position of privilege in order to understand others and reflect on your own choices and behavior.

didn’t think i would enjoy this book nearly as much as i did. she sounds like she could have been one of my metco students at my boston-suburbs public high school. it’s definitely given me some things to think about regarding how i interact with different populations of students. ask first and assume never.

"If you read a book you love, you want someone else to read it."
This book is one of them which I want you guys to read. It is not very often we come across a beautiful portrayed YA realistic book. This book has been on my TBR for a very long time, It was drowned under the piles of book that I want to read, now I regret I didn't read it sooner.

The book follows the life of Lilianna, first-generation Puerto Rican living in America. She was happy living with her parents and younger twin brothers.
Until her father didn't turn up home for 29 days didn't know what happened to him. She got this intuition has her father is in trouble because her mother was often crying in front of Television flipping through news channels. Hearing news on the presidents plans to build a wall across the Mexican-American border.
One day she hears devastating information that both her parents are undocumented migrants to the United States of America. Her father caught by the cops and deported back to Puerto Rica.

Suddenly her life is going all the way downhill her father was her life mentor. Being undocumented Immigrants life is not easy for her parents her mother doesn't have a permanent job and its very difficult to move forward.

She is discriminated on her accent, her birthplace, her face.
People often ask her where she is coming from.
The book revolves around family, love, discrimination and hardship in the lives of American Immigrants.

And the title(how could I forget it?) says the whole story. It is such a perfect title and I don't think that any other title would be better for the story.

me encantó
