The first Cadfael book I ever read (although not the first in the series). What a felicitous discovery!

The majority of this book is not set in the familiar Shrewsbury but in Wales and instead of the ever present Hugh, Brother Mark is back and has convinced Abbott Rudolfus that Cadfael is just the man he needs to accompany him on his journey. More action than usual, more Welsh than usual and less matchmaking, make this an unusual but just as good Cadfael mystery.

This was a good enough story. I really liked the descriptions of the interplay between the Welsh and the Dublin Danes. But this is no mystery, so it was somewhat of a dissapointment.

Quite a different Cadfael read. It was a little difficult deciding how to pronounce the Welsh words, but I finally managed towards the end to have some consistency, at least :-) In many of the earlier books I have missed the conflict between King Stephen and Empress Maud (Matilda), and this book took me into a completely different realm of Welch vs. Danes. I struggled at first, but soon became captured, and I dearly loved the ending!
