My partner suggested I read this book because he really enjoyed it. I don't remember reading choose-your-own-adventure books when I was younger so I thought, why not give this a try. I can honestly say that I don't know if this was an enjoyable experience for my overly anxious mind, but I appreciated the stories that Neil Patrick Harris shared throughout and it was an interesting way to recount his life story. I wish there would have been more about his relationship with David and their children, but maybe that'll be in the next book.
Book Review: Choose Your Own Autobiography by Neil Patrick Harris - one of the better celebrity memoirs I have read. The choose your own aspect was missing in the audiobook, but almost everyone that I know read it straight through anyway.

I’m a huge Neil Patrick Harris fan. I’m also a huge fan of Choose Your Own Adventure books. I did the adventure portion twice, then read the book from beginning to end just to find the parts I knew I would miss (and I wasn’t disappointed, there’s definitely a code word hidden in there that made me giddy, and I’d say you’ll know it if you’re a Disney fan who enjoys improv and got to go to Pleasure Island before it died in 2009!), and I found that it was just amazing. A must read.
Fun take on autobiographies. I think only NPH would be able to make this work.
Incredibly tender and hilarious, having NPH read it MAKES it. I'll admit a little bit of the "turn to page..." Of the choose your own is lost via audiobook but I still think that it dies a good job of conveying that experience. Insightful about the drive ambitious people have, and maybe a touch of how that comes off as douchery to others. Hearing NPH make the jokes come alive is why I gave 5.
Not as funny as I expected, although I had several laughs. NPH himself narrated the audiobook and I really liked his performance.
Choose Your Own Adventure is a little awkward as a format for an autobiography. I read through it was the CYOA way, successfully made it to the end, and then just read it straight through again. Neil Patrick Harris had an interesting life, and the fake-out endings were fun. It was well-written overall, but I prefer to read nonfiction in order.
This was a very clever and entertaining take on writing an autobiography. I enjoyed the "adventure" story choices but enjoyed the truth of the story more.
I liked this book. I did. But I didn't love it. I liked it as someone who likes celebrity gossip and good dirt. I liked it less as someone who likes books. I thought the format was cute, but ultimately didn't serve the material well. There were areas of the book that felt thin, like they were written as filler instead of purposefully.
It's a great book for those times that you want something fluffy and light between heavier reads, or something on an airplane. It was just the right combination of sweet, gossipy, and bitchy to make it highly entertaining. It was funny, but not laugh out loud funny or memorably funny. NPH fans will all enjoy the book thoroughly, as will fans of celebrity hoopla in general.
