I loved this book. I had so much fun listening to it and kept wishing that I had an excuse to go somewhere just so I could get back in the car and continue the audiobook.
The format of this book made an audiobook tricky and originally I had intended on picking it up, with a hard copy as a backup in case the audio didn't work well. The way this was handled was that instead of choosing page numbers to skip around to like in the traditional Choose Your Own Adventure books, the listener would be given the options and told to "keep listening" or "wait a little while." It was fun to hear these even with the choices being made, because it was almost like a "coming up next" commercial that kept you anticipating what was to come. I was hesitant about an audiobook like this, but I believe the production team handled it in the best possible way given their limitations. I like the shtick of this book, but I'm not likely to pick up another in the future. I don't think anyone else could successfully pull this off and if they did, it would just feel like a copycat and I'd probably judge it more harshly for that. Only Neil could do this.
Neil is a fantastic narrator, which is not always the case for authors reading their own work. He's dynamic and engaging, but speaks clearly and genuinely. I enjoyed following his career and life, even if it was out of order at times. The chapters on his family were especially sweet. I think I may have fallen in love with David Burtka just a little bit through Neil, most notably in the final chapter describing the big 40th birthday surprise (no spoilers!).
My only issue is that there are sections of this book (letters from other stars) that are narrated by a second person who is credited nowhere. I'm 95% sure it's Jim Dale, who is a big deal, and deserves to be credited. I contacted the publisher and they did not know who voiced these segments and only told me that David Burtka added a few lines to a chapter about how he & Neil met.
This was a very enjoyable listen and the audiobook has a few bonuses that the text copy doesn't, including real audio of a speech Neil gave as a 13 year old and an award acceptance speech he gave a few years ago. Additionally, there's also a PDF of drink and meal recipes and Neil intersperses the audio narration with instructions for magic tricks. It's all very NPH.

I am actually not sure if I finished this book because of it's unique (and super fun) format. The stories were interesting and engaging. I laughed out loud and teared up a little. The book pretty much made me want to be BFFs with NPH 4-ever. I would recommend if you are looking for an unconventional, enjoyable, quick read.
You know this book was going to be good when you saw the title. Who doesn't love a choose your own adventure (even if you cheat and look ahead). This autobiography is brilliant, fun, and funny. It is very entertaining and comes with recipes, magic tricks, drink recipes and a crossword puzzle. Have fun! :)
This was one of the best autobiographies I've listened to (it's narrated by Neil, so you just can't go wrong). It was at times LOL funny and for the most part just enjoyable to read about (especially all his theater hijinks, being a theater kid myself). The format is SO unique (choose your own adventure). This is a good one for a long car ride.
This was fun and funny, but (as NPH points out in the beginning) the choose your own adventure premise does not translate well to an audio book. Read the actual book.
I just finished NPH's autobiography today and it was excellent! I actually strongly encourage folks to listen to the book... NPH is such an entertainer and a lot of the book is written as an entertainment. And although he definitely goes for the laughs and adds in silly pieces, he is also amazingly honest and forthcoming about his life, his experiences, and his celebrity. There's some very touching stories and he really comes across as a very relatable and human person. I really enjoyed his discussions about being wowed by other celebrities, like Elton John and Bono.
What's not to love about Neil Patrick Harris? Not this autobiographic, in my opinion.
Like every other person who read this autobiography, I'm a fan of NPH. I thought the concept of doing an autobiography in a 'Choose Your Own Adventure' style was unique and interesting. Unfortunately the execution doesn't deliver on the premise. While NPH's wit comes through, the story telling style is disjointed. I missed big junks of his life. I tried starting all over but found it frustrating to have to re-read a large number of passages to establish new "adventures."
Maybe I'm too much of a linear or sequential person but I found the concept distracting from what should have been a great autobiography. When I finished reading I was just really disappointed.

I like NPH but this book made me not want to like him. Badly written. Hard to distinguish between fact and fiction. And made him come across as a major jerk. I read a few of the paths but finally couldn’t take it anymore.
