Really needs a good editor to go through it. Plot pacing was weird, things moving way too quickly with barely any tension or hardship. Like how is it that your journey to get the grimoire is like 3 pages? Idk… not enjoying this enough to continue

This was a good time. The tension and yearning were great. A true slow burn. Will continue with book 2.

Not a likable FMC. This book has all the tropes that draw a romance fantasy reader in...the MMC(Raphael) is tall, muscular, stoic; unless provoked, hundreds of years old, nearly immortal, wealthy handsome, brave, a vampire and a shape shifter. One thing I could not get past was he could shape shift into an actual bat! Now the author did not describe how big this bat was, but in my mind, I could not imagine Raphael flying away with ANYONE to safety.  The FMC(Samara) is young, stubborn, fallen on hard times,  naive, beautiful, and can work with magic(albeit with cards). There is the banter that they engage in that was entertaining, as well as their joined quest/forced proximity. There definitely was a slow burn through the book. For me though, that is where the story became a 'must read one more chapter' to almost DNF. Samara, is frustrating and she became my least favorite character. Some examples were: because of her living conditions in poor diet, she didn't start her period until she was twenty and didn't know what was happening to her. Another frustrating point was she was imprisoned for 12 years in harsh conditions, but thought of the better more fortunate life she lived when she was eight and remembered details, though hazy, were more impressionable than her current situation. Such as when she met her previous kingdom's spy (that knew her when she was eight), she trusted him more than Raphael, that during their journey kept her clothed, warm, fed and safe. She also had a hatred for vampires she carried throughout the book and ended up hurting the MMC at the very end anyway. This was a complete plot twist for me,  because I thought I was going to read a slow burn romance; enemies to lovers, but there was no spice whatsoever in this book. Samara was locked up,  which again was weird because she committed a crime against Raphael, and yet her guard, Demos still offered her blood sustenance for someone that was newly turned and needed to drink. You would think Demos's anger and betrayal for her harming his friend/king of more than two hundred years would cause him to withhold anything she needed for comfort. The relationship with the oracle/witch Thea, I saw no point in her character, except to give Samara, a woman to first be jealous of and then someone to hang around with and shop spending Raphael's money

Samara breaks out of a prison she shouldn’t be in, because she is not guilty of the crime of which she is accused. She leaves an environment of torment and abuse with the help of a vampire she is terrified of, but also sympathizes with because of their shared abuse at the hands of wicked guards.
Raphael is the worst kind of a vampire with a thirst for blood, the mortal enemy of witches, the same breed that killed her mother.
Throughout the story, Samara has an internal struggle with her own magical powers, even considering giving them up a new life. Her internal dialogue questioning herself and the evil ways of the vampire she has chosen to free kept me intrigued to find out what she will decide.
A Bargain So Bloody is a slow burn romantasy that will keep you interested, because the characters are likeable and develop a partnership you want to see get deeper!
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC of this book.
I am looking forward to part 2 of this great story!

This book was like 3.75⭐️, but soo many thing happened and it's all because of the FMC, she is just is soo stupid and judgmental i wanted to slap her , like girl you have a brain do a little bit of thinking before you betray the one who is doing everything to protect you, it's so frustrating to see her trust the wrong person
even if she doesn't want to stay in the vampire kingdom she can go to anywhere else, but no she want to trust the king spyman and  return to the kingdom who sent her to prison when she was 8, like girl are you for real ?!!
, and she is judging a whole race of vampire based on  an action of an individual who got this opportunity because your king give it to him,
Why it's always the FMC HIDDEN identity is a
princess or some type of royal
.
Disappointing read, Don't recommend.

This was a fun dark romantasy. I enjoyed the slow burn and tension, the unique magic, and the mystery. I thought the Vampire Kingdom and all the dynamics of their society was so interesting.

I love how protective the MMC is. And his pet names?! Swoon! The FMC started to trust herself more and started to heal from years of trauma. I am excited to see more growth from the FMC.

I am honored to be an ARC reader for this and I look forward to the next book!

3.5 stars rounded up.

All in all, this was a decent book. I enjoyed the plot and felt engaged while reading. The narrator was phenomenal.

The book centers around vampires, witches, and voids (humans). There are vampire territories, witch territories, and lands beyond that contain other creatures.

I think the thing that annoyed me was some of Samara's decisions and inner monologue. At times, I wanted to grab her shoulders and shake her for being so stupid, but then I had to remind myself of her past experiences and put myself in her shoes to make her decisions make sense.

Raphael, the vampire Samara makes a deal with, is the epitome of "touch her and die." He definitely fits in the "morally gray" box, making decisions according to his kind's laws and perspectives. He's a villain you can't help loving, despite his darkness.

There's a twist at the end that definitely makes me interested for book two. This wasn't a favorite read by any means, but it was certainly good enough that I'll pick up book two when it comes out.

Thank you NetGalley, Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op, and Vasilia Drake for an audio ARC of this book. My review is my own opinions.
