Bardugo does a great job of creating an intricate weaving plot. So many parts of this story felt like they could be climaxes and yet they each built off of the other until we came to the actual peak of the plot. As with the first book, the characters are what shine. In this book, we get a more nuanced look at their backstories than we did in the first book and that fleshes them out in a way that felt satisfying. This was a truly great conclusion to this duology and a great return to the Grishaverse. It leaves the story open enough that these characters could return in other books while still tying together the story at the heart of the duology. I can’t wait to see how this is translated to the screen in the Shadow and Bone television series.
