Really enjoyed this writing style. The fairytale feeling. Similar as Novik's Spinning Silver. I don't understand how a writer who can write this also wrote garbage like the Scholomance.

This book was bland and so difficult to stay interested in that it made me fully quit reading anything for about 3 months. I tried to finish it, but only made it 19% further before I just can't anymore. It's a chore and has no real redeeming qualities.
(3.5) My god it took me so long to get through this book. I did really enjoy it while I was reading it, and I liked the Russian fairytale/lore, it was just a really slow read for me.
Appreciated that it didn’t have complex world building and huge cast of characters, but I just didn’t care about any of the characters - they all seemed flat to me. I kept checking to see how much progress I’d made and it felt interminable so I gave up.
Hmm I liked the first half which was very rooted in European fairy tales but the second half was hokey save the world / unlikely romance stuff. This is a generous three; it is a 2.5 really and, had I not been craving an easy read because of a heavy cold, it would have been a straight 2 I suspect. To be fair I think I might be a victim of 99p amazon enthusiasm and mislabelling - I suspect it is aimed at the YA market though as it is more than a little simplistic (very white/ European/ straight) and small c conservative.
