Listened to the audiobook and I love/hate that they went with a foreign narrator, it adds immersive authenticity to the story but it also disrupts the flow of storytelling because she's stumbling over words, mispronouncing them, and the flow is very off as she tries to reads.
Also did not care for the male protag, he seems pretty abusive and I thought we were over these relationships after Twilight. Story lost my attention after it turns away from fairytales to political intrigue.

This has a little bit of mystery, romance, humor, and a lot of fantasy. The first chapter took a bit only because it is the second chapter where the story begins.
Novik writes a strong female character in Agnieszka, who has once found her voice stands up and does what she believes is the right and fro her shelf while navigating her world. She finds her self navigating a world among a wizard who chooses with withdrawal from the world, a prince who has been allowed to do as he pleases with his own agenda, and to find her place among other witches and wizards who believe her to be beneath them and use her for their own gain all the while trying to save not just her village but a kingdom from evil and itself.
I thoroughly read to almost 2 in the morning once I began reading the book only to finish the next day. Once I was past the first chapter the story flowed into a fantasy mystery bring you along for the ride. I did not want to put it down. All the twist and turns from the plot to the character development had be devouring the book. This is a book with a little of everything that keeps you hooked til the end.

4.5 stars.
“There was a song in this forest, too, but it was a savage song, whispering of madness and tearing and rage.”
This is not what I was expecting at all and yet I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was dark, magical and confusing but it somehow worked.
“You’ve been inexpressibly lucky,” he said finally. “And inexpressibly mad, although in your case the two seem to be the same thing”

Slow pace with a plot that went nowhere. This book started strong and got boring very quickly
