slow-paced
This book is perfectly paced and original. Naomi novik could write a shopping list and I would read it and love it. I loved every second of reading this and I just want to read more and more from her. When I was reading it I forgot about everything else in the world.

Uprooted answers the question ‘What if a fairy tale were spun out as a stand-alone fantasy novel? But make it modern. Nigella wouldn’t be embarrassed to leave it behind in an Uber?’ The book works it all out: why woods are cursed, why girls get stolen, why wizards are feared. If that’s not enough, it’s also set it in a Medieval Lithuania you can visualise to the detail of its hair ornaments and mycology.
I got a similar kick out of it as I did playing the early Harry Potter video games, or some combat-free zones in an RPG where you really just talk to demon soldiers and take in the world. Apart from that, I appreciated that it offers something welcome to the genre for being genuinely new – a bit of a Sally Rooney moment for SFF.
All that was good. Unfortunately I didn’t warm it the characters. Each decision Agnieska makes is based on a wholesome Griffindor morality that she never veers from – and she apologises … a lot.
Opposite her is The Dragon, a kind of Mr Rochester who abuses Agnieska in not-so-subtle ways and still has her fall in love with him.
Better than Spinning Silver for me. A really exciting prospect. But I wouldn’t have finished it if I hadn’t switched to audiobook 1/3 of the way through.

Honestly, disappointing. And that romance felt thrown in at the last moment.
