The writing was excellent, the magic system was well thought out and interesting, and the story was enjoyable, with very fairy tale vibes, which was both good and bad. My biggest issue (and why I couldn't give more stars) is the lack of emotional connection I felt to any of the characters. Every character felt a bit flat or muted to me- instead of a vibrant world with engaging characters, it all felt very distant and dull. Even though the story about the woods and Kasia seemed like they should have felt important, I just didn't care about the plot or the characters that much. The vast majority of the book felt gloomy and grey, and didn't really make me feel anything, and even the "happier" bits felt very muted. Very sad because the prose really was great.
dark
No character growth or really any sort of journey or theme or wtv lol like a lot of unnecessary characters too and the novel felt badly plotted ngl because a lot of it felt pulled out of nowhere with little build up.
I love fairytale retellings🥰 I really liked this, I love witches and witch-in-the-woods vibes and I was so invested in the story. I really liked the magic system and how Agnieszka’s magic complemented Sarkan’s but was just as powerful. I also really liked Agnieszka and Kasia’s friendship, I know they weren’t technically sisters but they’re more realistic sisters than a lot of sibling relationships I’ve read.
Novik is a great writer, I need to read Temeraire now 😫
My only complaint is the romance at the end- why did we never get a love confession from Sarkan? :( I just wanted him to say he loved her once or apologize for leaving or say he was staying with her forever 🥺 Who cares about a sex scene when he doesn’t even kiss her in happiness after they win?

Gratamente sorprendida. Resulta que aún queda fantasÃa juvenil moderna que no me ponga de los nervios :)
Una cosa que me ha llamado la atención y que me parece lo más reseñable de este libro es los diferentes tipos de villanos que hay. Da para un análisis interesante.

I read this book with a good friend of mine… (Hi, Garce!) It definitely made this book incredible, but it wasn’t without merit. The prose was powerful and vivid, and it truly threw you into a whimsical storybook setting. I had many more thoughts on this book, but those are going to have to be for Garce’s eyes only.
All in all, a brilliant fantasy with complex relationships to tie it all together.

first half was a refreshing fantasy book with nature themes involving clueless peasants.
second half was just bad.
unnecessary romance feels forced.
world develops way to fast in the last 10% ofthe book.
convenient items or spells to solve problems. average of 1 and 3 out of 5 is 2
