The book was a slow build for me, as the fantasy tropes were too convenient and not interesting enough. But, as the narrative builds and the world expands the book keeps improving right up to the end.

Va a ser una reseña de las difíciles, ya que a pesar de las cosas buenas que sí le he visto a esta historia no ha terminado en ningún momento de engancharme o convencerme... Y me ha dado bastante rabia, ya que la trama y la ambientación tenían lo suficiente para llegar a converse en destacables para mi.
"Un cuento oscuro" hace honor a su nombre con una historia tenebrosa, opresiva y asfixiante. En ella el enemigo no es otro que el Bosque que rodea el hogar de nuestra protagonista. Lejos de la imagen pura que podemos tener de la naturaleza, Novik convierte el Bosque en un ente maligno que corrompe a aquellos que osan acercarse a su linde, luchando por extender su impureza y ganarle territorio a unos seres humanos que luchan por mantener su territorio. Los magos tendrán un papel fundamental en mantener esa oscuridad a raya, y nuestra protagonista Agnieszka descubrirá que tendrá un papel mucho más relevante en este asunto de lo que ella cree.
Lo que más me ha gustado sin duda de esta historia ha sido su ambientación: esa idea del Bosque como ser inteligente, como enemigo que busca extender su corrupción entre unos lugareños asfixiados por la constante amenaza. Nunca sabes si el bosque va a llevarse a uno de los tuyos y si volverá a por ti para acabar con todo lo que conoces.
Esa ambientación tan cautivadora, junto con una historia que no está nada mal, ha sido lo que me mantuvo leyendo hasta el final. No se puede negar que esta historia tiene algo especial, sin embargo... Creo que mi mayor problema ha sido la forma en la que todo está contado.
Tras darle muchas vueltas y no entender muy bien por qué una historia con tanto potencial no me terminaba de llegar ni de importar... Llegué a la conclusión de que mi problema es que no conecté con el estilo de la autora. Y no porque fuese lento, suelo disfrutar mucho de las historias que van despacio (ahí tenemos a Robin Hobb, que es de mis autoras favoritas). Pero creo que este libro se me ha hecho demasiado descriptivo en todos los aspectos. Muy pocos diálogos, poca interacción entre los personajes y escenas de acción demasiado largas en las que se describía hasta el más ínfimo detalle. Al final, se me hizo demasiado pesado.
Cuando al fin parecía que me estaba enganchando, enlazó con un final eterno que parecía no acabar nunca, en el que quería mantener el punto álgido tanto tiempo que al final acabé perdiendo el interés y solo quería que por favor terminase ya. Llegó un punto en el que el hastío hizo que me terminasen dando igual tanto la historia como los personajes (que sinceramente, no me parece que se profundice demasiado en ellos tampoco).
Tampoco me ha convencido el sistema de magia, la descripción interminable de hechizos en los que no entendía muy bien que estaba pasando y con los que tenías la sensación de que todo podía pasar simplemente porque sí, aunque la protagonista llevase dos días practicando la magia. Que sí, que la magia no tiene que tener siempre reglas y es totalmente válido el concepto de magia como algo que no siempre tenemos que entender, pero... A mi no me termina de convencer, porque siento que todo puedes arreglarlo sacándote algo de la manga en el último momento sin tener que dar explicaciones de nada.
Como conclusión, creo que es una buena historia con una atmósfera increíble, pero la forma en la que está contada no me gustó, porque no creo que el estilo de Naomi Novik sea para mi. Le saco cosas buenas a esta lectura, pero en general me ha dejado muy fría.

I absolutely despise the MMC, despite thinking that I would perhaps like that "enemies/rivals to lovers" trope or whatever. Maybe it's him. Maybe it's me. Either way, I couldn't believe they'd end up in a relationship together. I was, if anything, rooting for him to die. Lol.
Perhaps it's because the MC had no power or balls and the imbalance just didn't hit right. I'm pretty sure there will be some enemies to lovers out there that enthralls me, without being replete with edgy, sarcastic dialogue, and over-the-top badassery and wit (that sort of stuff is simply too forced/transparent/tropey for me to enjoy). But back to this book--I do believe everything else was perfectly serving (the writing style, the environment), but not to the degree that I'd enjoy reading the rest of a romance book where I hate the romance.

I loved just about everything about this book. I had read so many conflicting reviews but eventually my love of fairy tales won over and I decided to pick this up. I am so glad I did. It was fantastic and the magic system is by far one of my favorites of any series. The plot did not go where I was expecting at all but I really enjoyed every moment of it. It was hard to put down with something new happening every chapter. I would suggest you read this if you love darker fairy tales.
I really enjoyed this book- it was a simple tale with a fantastic main character. I loved that she was herself from start to finish. I was sad when the story was over but I like that this is a standalone book.
my favourite thing in this book was the descriptions of magic. it’s weird because i didn’t like the overall writing, but when it came to the magic parts, i think the writing instantly felt more natural and better. the magic in this book was truly magic. i literally felt it flowing through the pages. so i don’t understand how, in the remaining 80% of the book, the writing was more dull :(
we are having multiple very cool, badass, “yesss that’s my girlll” moments throughout this book - and i loved all those moments - but again… those moments get repeated. our main character does something once, and it’s so cool to see, but 70 pages later she does it again and i’m supposed to be impressed again? this repetition was also there with the spells they’ve used, and actually almost the whole plot. i will give examples under the review with spoilers for those who’ve read the book. i loved the friendship between our main character and her best friend, but the rest of the relationships in the book meant nothing to me. even for the romantic relationship, i felt 0. the book’s pros were very strong, but the cons were there as well. so it’ll be a 3⭐️ out of 5 for me! will be reading more of Naomi Novik though
