This book grabbed my attention from the start and held it through to the end.  I loved the story of a podcaster looking into her own school history of a murder of a classmate.  With her students attempting a podcast similar to Serial, she examines not only the original murder but also society as a whole in this Me Too age.

Could not put this book down. Thought about it constantly. Once the main storyline began, it swept me under. And the social commentary felt so sharp and real, because there were allowed to be no real answers. Just questions. As the title would suggest ;)

Only reason this isn’t a 5 star read for me is because I was hoping for just a bit more from the ending.

Absolutely riveting! This is a fascinating take on a “literary thriller,” with a propulsive storyline and thought-provoking social commentary. I’ve been thinking about this book since I finished it three days ago. There are so many things I enjoyed about this, but the author’s craft choices were my favorite part. From the beginning, I was totally hooked on the narration style — Bodie addresses a specific listener and tells her story throughout the book as though he is the listener. There was also a repetition of lines about crime victims that could’ve been straight from headlines throughout, driving home the book’s commentary on victims, true crime, violence against women, and more.
this is sort of not a spoiler, but still, the chapters throughout that rehashed the murder as committed by each suspect were so effective!!!
I could say a million more things about this book (and might), but you should really just read it for yourself.

A thought-provoking deep dive into power, privilege, and justice. It really captures the feeling of "kids these days might have it hard, but the world is better for them in so many ways, and I love and envy them for it".

You know the one.

Note: It is, ostensibly, a murder mystery, but it's much more meditative than that. Don't expect a fast-paced thriller lacking nuance.

EDIT: A thought, much later: This book felt like it was about holding yourself accountable yet forgiving yourself for being a teenager.

This was not the murder mystery I was expecting. Instead, it feels like an incredibly long, drawn out political statement (about cancel culture, sexual assault, age gaps in relationships, the justice system, marital abuse, gender norms, the me too movement, misogyny) - I think the author should have had a more concrete focus on only a few of those issues? Also, I HATE when books bring up the pandemic, and the last third of the book would not stop talking about it. I felt like the author was trying very hard to be woke but you could tell she’s a white lady idk. There was also WAY too many characters it was hard to know who was who most of the time. The main character was not even likeable either. I did enjoy the narration of it though, but it was not worth it. Sorry for the unpopular opinions.
