The story resumes some months after the events of "Scalding Deceit", with Hicks and Louis temporarily not together. The separation is not doing either of them much good -- sail without boat, boat without sail -- but they are not suffering equally. Hicks is just kind of aimless and and slobby, whereas Baker has gone a bit off the rails.

I'm not giving away anything that can't be guessed from the book cover when I tell you that circumstances conspire to bring them (separately) to Alaska, where a mystery is afoot. The sense of place evoked by the author's description of place and people is exceptional. You feel immersed in small-town Alaska (without, it must be said, being inspired to visit -- the North Pole tourist bureau is unlikely to endorse this novel).

As with the previous books in the series, the writing moves along at a strong pace with no dull stretches. And again the characters we meet are interesting and well-developed. Do Hicks and Baker get their mojo back? Is the mystery solved? Well, I am certainly not about to tell you...
