I thought this was spectacular. This book succeeds most strongly in the world and atmosphere it delivers to you. Some things may be overwhelmingly detailed but I found the imagination of Morgenstern to be so superb that I didn't mind. I think the plot is very take it or leave it, but there's quite a lot to digest and thankfully I found that I loved most, if not all, of it. Id certainly recommend this.

I wanted to love this book, but ultimately it really wasn't quite to my taste. The story was great but there wasn't enough focus on it - it felt like too many words were spent dwelling on descriptive detail. I get it: everything is rich, luxe, ornate, etc. I don't need to beaten over the head with it on practically every page. I feel like, at some point, it's as if the author hasn't given me enough credit to take the scene they've set and run with it in my own imagination.

That said, it's just a taste thing. The book is well-written and the story is interesting. I just felt that it was out of balance. I spent too many pages wading through descriptions of dresses and bookshelves and foodstuffs in order to get to the story.

I absolutely adored this book. It did get a little confusing as it constantly jumps back and forth between characters and time periods. But I just couldn't put it down.

i would definitely say this book, the whole way through has a bittersweet feel to it.

Everything is written and described magically, but the underlying sense of darkness and hopelessness is something that you can't shake...

But despite that. It is an excellent read. It will make you feel like you're there, part of it and make you want to cry when you finish and remember that, that world isn't reality. But on the other hand you can't imagine ever being stuck in the protagonists situation.

Absolutely fabulous.
I would recommend this to anyone!

Definitely unlike anything i've read before. I don't even have any books to compare it to!

The writing and the atmosphere were great, with beautiful imagery. Also, loved the reveurs! Some things seemed to come out of nowhere, for me myself personally. Still enjoyed it overall!

2018: Adored it. Such beautiful writing and so inspiring. It felt like an intricately woven tapestry where everything is intentional. Already looking forward to rereading it again and again. A very enchanting story and world. I was worried I would be let down by the ending but definitely wasn't. It was predictable in parts but the journey was so enjoyable that I could get carried away and just enjoy it! One of the best stand alone fantasy books I've read.

2024: beautiful imagery and captivating narrative. Looking forward to discussing it with the Crazy Auntie Crew Book Club
