A Million Suns is the second book of the Godspeed series which I didn’t like as much as the first book; it was still a great book but some of the characters annoyed me, and the plot dragged in parts.

After the revelations of Across the Universe, everything changes at the Godspeed. The people now know the truth that the spaceship is not moving. Since they don’t put drugs into the water anymore, Elder struggles to lead his people and keep them happy. In comparison, Amy spends most of the time solving a puzzle Orion gave her which was quite enjoyable to read about.

You can say what you want about the drugs, but the ship kinda worked before. The characters are in such a dilemma and the stakes are so high. It seemingly takes only one wrong decision and their whole society could fall apart which was just so tense. Other things I liked about the story is the fact that romance is only in a secondary place and that the setting in space is so creepy.

In the end, it is revealed that
the Godspeed is very close to the new earth, but they couldn’t land because something is already alive there – I loved this plot twist. Another twist I didn’t enjoy though was the one that Doc is the evil one that wants to keep the system going and even plants a bomb to stop the landing. This came a bit out of the blue but was dramatic nevertheless. There’s still hope because there’s another way to reach the new planet

I actually don’t have much to say about the characters since they are not really the focus of the story. Just like in the first book, I enjoyed the different POVs since Amy and Elder view the Godspeed so differently. I only have a strong opinion towards Bartie who annoyed me so much; he does have a point but he’s still overreacting.

All in all, A Million Suns is an interesting genre mix between YA sci-fi and mystery that is not so much full of clichés as other books in its genre which makes it quite interesting.

This time the author digs deep into some heavy themes, and delas more with the two abusive issues I felt were glossed over in the first book. (view spoiler)

I think Ms. Revis does a great job exploring what might happen when an authoritarian regime collapes, and people’s blinders are ripped off (in this case taking the people off Phydus).

My biggest problem with this book is the plot device used to move the action along. If Orion wanted Amy to have certain information, he should have told her. Leaving behind an elaborate clue-laden trails is a convoluted path of ridiculousness. Ugh!

Having Amy accidentally find or come across answers - even answers that lead to more questions - would have made this a better read for me. Instead, I rolled my eyes and shook my head every time they found or solved a clue, because WTF?!?! This is an asinine, inefficient, and potentially disastrous way to impart vital knowledge to another person.
