Am Anfang mochte ich es nicht so, es hat sich ziemlich in die Länge gezogen. Aber das Ende ist so toll, das mir das Buch sehr gefällt.

Cute story that had a lot of foreshadowing while remaining mysterious with loveable characters

The cover is really appealing but it was really slow, no exciting twists and turns... I didn't relate to the characters at all. The one good thing this author does well is that she portrays each characters personality really well.. Her characters come off as boring though.... most of the time Luce the protagonist in this book is just thinking about Daniel,Daniel,Daniel I mean I get that they are the main plot line of the story being star crossed lovers and all. but does she really have to obsess that much... She seems like quite a judgmental person..... like when she assumes that Daniel is with Gabbe like sure it did sound a bit like they are a couple when Gabbe says "I'm the only one you have"but Luce jumped to conclusions without confronting them... It would of been more exciting if she confronted them or Just Gabbe... I think that Luce should of interacted with Penn a lot more and thought of her more... One really unreal aspect of this story is that if someone in real life got sent to unfamiliar surroundings or a reform school like Sword and Cross they'd think of their family more... Whether they were missing them or seething that they sent them away.

England the year 1854. This book begins in the past. What an exciting beginning it tells the story from his perspective of two star-crossed lovers who have repeatedly been torn apart. He remembers and tries to walk away. She doesn’t and has no understanding of why she is drawn to him. But when they do get together, the combustion draws something strange. However, we have no names as of yet.
Current day: Luce became a student at the Sword & Cross reform school. Obviously, there is a reason she is here. Still, she seems like a typical teenager, minus some issues she seems to have that aren’t explained. She does mention a lot of details about this darkness she experiences. This school is clearly for troubled teens. I’m still wondering what her story is and what type of paranormal she is.
There is a weird love triangle in this book as she goes back and forth between Cam and Daniel. They both show something you could call interest. Cam is more forward and swoony, but we don’t know the skeletons in his closet. Daniel is more mean and snide, but we do know they have a history.
This book is very slow-moving to eventually figure out the paranormal aspects. A tragic accident at school leaves us with more questions than answers and Luce once again under scrutiny. We do finally get answers. There is romance, but it is a very young adult.
Things actually ramp up finally, but of course, now it is so much action that it is hard to comprehend the answers. Luce must go away, and it seems there is a tentative truce in place for the ones on opposite sides of this war. You do finally discover what kinds of paranormals are in this book, and I have to say I was shocked and surprised.
However, the book was very long and drawn out, and I wasn’t as into the story as I had hoped to be, so I probably won’t be reading any more in this series. I also won’t reveal the paranormal mystery in the book to you. You’ll have to read it yourself. I would call this book a paranormal romance. There was so little romance in it, but it definitely classifies as paranormal fiction.

Saw the trailer for movie and thought I should read this, was sitting on my bought-TBR for a few years now (since October 15, 2014). And this is not even my oldest unread ebook by far.
Was in the mood for something different after I read a few (well done) police procedurals.
At 30% possible DNF, currently going in Fast-Forward-mode through the book as I want to see how it ends. Read some reviews, 2 of which I will link instead of going into the deep end and sinking this book.
Heroine is bad, meek, unsure, often late without good reason (would drive me crazy), Twilight comes to mind, but in my opinion, even that was better (still think, Twilight without Edward Cullen would have been better). Some review (Dark Faerie, see link below) said, World-Building was bad, and I agree. So, to not repeat what others have written, I will link to it.

Comparing the little the trailer for the movie has shown, my guess is, it is not better, but shorter (and wastes less time).
Not recommended, boring time-waster. Cannot understand how this sold or even got filmed. Maybe they all fell for the beautiful covers (as I did). Also, pesky and not very good love-triangle. Yawn!
In all probability I will not even think of beginning Torment anytime in the future. Was not real cheap as a two-book-in-one-ebook deal, so waste of money.
Wow, the ending finished it for me, with a few nice twists I did not guess, and a little action and some explanations which where all missing from rest-say-95% of the book.
So, now my favourite character is not Pennyweather Van Syckle-Lockwood (the geeky one), instead it is the only person who nearly gets the job done. But only just. Miss Sophia Bliss. Not to spoil anything, but she is my kind of woman, strong and willful. Most other characters, including Cam and Daniel, are so weak. And to think out of this story the author managed to squeeze 4 more books and 1 or 2 novella(s)?! Big Yawn!
Instead read The "Penryn & the End of Days"-Trilogy by Susan Ee, at least it has action and some of the worldbuilding is not half bad (although too gruesome, imho).
